History of Basket WeavingHistorically, basket weaving dates back to the city of Faiyum, when baskets were found in the Egyptian pyramids more than 10,000 years ago. Since then, baskets have been found in every civilization. In earlier times, baskets were a necessity, being used to carry food, clothing, seed, and used to carry furs for trade. Many flexible materials have been used to weave baskets, such as vines, leaves, grasses, roots, tree bark, reed, cane, and raffia to name a few. Throughout time, all baskets were hand woven and still are today. With all of our technology and “know-how”, no machine has ever been invented or developed to mass produce baskets!

A piece of trivia for you! Do you happen to know whom the most famous basket weaver was of all times? Many museum experts say it is “Dat So La Lee.” A native American born in Nevada between 1825 and 1850 and given the birth name of Dabuda. She started her career as a basket weaver at age 45 and her baskets were a true work of art. Today, her baskets are on display in several museums throughout the United States. In 1978, three of her baskets were stolen from The Nevada State Museum, went underground for over 20 years, and reappeared in 1999. The baskets were valued at $300,000 each!

Today, basket weaving is a very popular form of art. And, thousands of years later, we now have “Fabric Weaving All Occasion Baskets” using timtex!

So Many Kaleidoscopes! These kaleidoscopes, literally, took only minutes to create and it's so easy, a novice can do it! Watch a quick instructional video, then just select a shape, move the kaleidoscope area to various positions over the shape while watching in the viewing window, then add a background color. The possibilities for scrapbooking and quilting are endless! The first three kaleidoscopes displayed below were created using the same photo of a compass star quilt. The fourth kaleidoscope below was created from a photo of a clematis flower, and the last kaleidoscope was created from a photo of a sunset. I even created kaleidoscopes using fabric! For more excitement, try scanning in items such as feathers, buttons, ribbon, multiply photos, labels, etc.into your paint program to create a jpeg, then import to Kaleidoscope Kreator. Have fun, and be amazed at your creations!

Electric Quilt 6.0What a superior package! My hats go off to the entire programming staff! Packed full of new features and a new look. Big, bold, and bright, with colorful new fabrics. New layout features, new borders styles known as auto borders that are automatically added to the sketchbook as blocks, new notecard features, new thread and photo library, and new tools on the tool bar. Too many new features to mention here. And if you are upgrading to EQ6, don't worry, your EQ5 files will not be overwritten. The user manual gives excellent instructions for copying your EQ5 files to EQ6. The user manual consists of easy to follow instructions and the software contains many instructional videos on many many topics, which I found to be a great learning tool. Very reasonably priced and well worth the money! (In comparison, I spent over $2,000 for an embroidery software package (though, many more components), with a single component of the package costing $650.00. And the upgrade for the embroidery suite was $600.00). PLEASE NOTE: Microsoft Office XP is required. In addition, the software will need to be activated the first time on each computer via electricquilt.com and can only be activated a total of four times. So, beware, if you own or lease more than four computers, now or in the future, as I do, you will have to buy the software again!

Make a Personalized Business Card Holder!     An Easy and Fun One Hour Project! Create a Business Card Holder as seen in the issue of Designs in Machine Embroidery magazine, January/February, 2007. Better Yet Personalize it! Get your free business card outline download from www.dzgns.com .

Here are a few helpful hints: (1) If personalizing, embroider the initial on fabric before adhering it to the foundation stablelizer. I used timtex as the foundation stablelizer and it worked beautifully! (2) I used a Jean Needle, size 80, for the satin stitching outline and it looks great! (3) I used snaps from www.snapsource.com. They are easy to install, longlasting, and always look very professional each and every time! Business Card Holder
